ASSIGNMENT #2

Assignment 2:

  1. Research your target audience and competitors. Who are they? Can you leverage anything from their site? What will set your site apart from your competition? Include links and screen shots on your blog for discussion.
  2. Using pen and paper and/or computer, create a sitemap of the existing site (if there is one) as well as a sitemap for your project site. Post them to your class blog.
  3. Make a user flow chart on paper or computer. Depending on your site, it may not be much different from your sitemap.
  4. Bring in the current logo/branding, if there is one, and discuss if, why and how you're going to change it. Do new sketches. If you need to create a new logo, bring in possible sketches or type treatments.
BACKGROUND & TARGET AUDIENCE

AN ONLINE COMMUNITY OF SHOPS
SHOWCASING HIGH QUALITY ANTIQUES & COLLECTIBLES
aka the ETSY for Antiques

  • Starting with just one shop, Ruby Lane has steadily grown to host more than 2,500 shops today with an extensive selection of over 560,000 antique and vintage collectible items
  • Target Audience:
(1) According to the company themselves, their website visitors are well-educated web users who are comfortable buying online and have disposable income to fuel your business. 87% of Ruby Lane buyers are female and 93% are aged 40-79. Furthermore, 76% of users who come to Ruby Lane earn more than $50,000 per year.

  • Competition (Other Online Marketplaces):
(1) 1stdibs

(2) Lofty

*NOTE: Ruby Lane has a luxury version of their site called Ruby Lux

- I like the modernness of Ruby Lux but I'd like Ruby Lane to match the target audience still. The price points and quality of pieces are lower.

- Try to target younger audience as well?

(3) Tias: The Internet Antique Shop

(4) Go Antiques

have a few to choose from. Include links and screenshots on your blog.

Examples of Bad Web Design

COMPANY #1: Social Media 22
Website Design, PR & Online Marketing
Note: Almost 100% of clients are geared Children brands so these brands are targeted towards the parents

Why I think this is bad design:

  • At first, I didn't think the homepage was terrible aesthetically and also navigation wise it was pretty easy to find what I was looking for. But upon exploring the company more I noticed that a lot of their clients were children's brands. The websites to these brands are much more fun, cheerful and soft on the eye. I feel that if this is the bulk of their clients and it seems they are focused on these types of companies, then their website should reflect a warmer feeling.

  • The images look very generic, aside from the women and her child. Maybe they can have more parenting photos and on their homepage some samples of their work as the slideshow rather than stock images.

Examples of their client's websites:

  • They have a PDF to download of their case studies and press, too long to load, should just put on their page so it's easier to access for potential clients. Also layout is too cluttered.

COMPANY #2: Baco Dumbo
Event Space

Why I think this is bad design:
  • Aesthetic: No real brand identity tying all the elements together. Knowing the space, it is beautiful and that is not reflected on their website. The photos are bad quality and not displayed in an organized, easily accessible way.
  • Social Media Icons should be on home page. Not on contact page.
  • Gallery: scrolling side to side, seems a bit too long, I think it should be displayed maybe like a contact page or even categorized (i.e. Weddings, Corporate Events, etc.)

Yale's Art School

Why I think this is bad design:
  • For being such a prestigious school, you'd think the design would be much more cleaner! This just looks like a cluster of images and test slapped into a unthought out collage. The backgrounds are too busy and there seems to be no type to style guides/color coordination etc.
  • The home button is at the bottom, should be somewhere at the top.
  • Can't see contact info on some pages

EXAMPLES OF GOOD DESIGN
COMPANY: Lytton Living
Website promoting a new neighborhood in Toronto, Canada

Why I think this is a good design:
  • Amazing navigation (Call to action icon tells you what happens if you scroll or click on it) and each button simple and direct yet once you open the page it is very thorough in what they are trying to convey. Example: Neighbourhood page is nicely organized and easy to navigate
  • Design: clean and very elegant as I see matches the aesthetic of the homes.

COMPANY #2: Fatherly
Fatherly is a parenting resource for men who understand that embracing what they’ve become doesn’t mean giving up who they are.

Why I think this is good design:
  • Once again it is well organized/categorized based on what fathers may be looking to read about. It is also categorized based on age group.
  • I feel the layout is simple/ like a grid. Simple scrolling down for different stories based on that one category. I feel that men don't like too much fuss when trying to read up on things, so the easier and more organized the better.

COMPANY #3: Legwork Studio
Animation Studio

Why I think this is good design:
  • Simple, focusing on the animations aka their work
  • Their website has a definite brand identity/overall aesthetic and feeling
